A special place in the modern information space of our country is occupied by rumors. Rumors are considered today not only as a spontaneous communicative phenomenon, but also as a technology of influence on public consciousness. The modern press actively refers to rumors as one of the sources of information. With the help of rumors, public opinion, mood, social stereotypes and attitudes of the audience, the information situation in the region are created and transmitted. However, the technology of working with rumors can vary greatly depending on what type of media belongs to, its audience, content model, goals and objectives that the media sets for the audience.
The subject of this study is rumors in high-quality and mass media.
The object of the study is representatives of high-quality press - "Rossiyskaya Gazeta" and "New Siberia", as well as mass media - "Komsomolskaya Pravda"and" Yellow Newspaper". In addition, a representative of a mixed type will be considered – "Arguments and Facts", which combines the characteristics of high-quality and mass media.
The purpose of the study is to identify the features of the functioning of rumors in high-quality and mass media.
Objectives: to study the literature devoted to the problem of rumors in modern media, to conduct a content analysis of high-quality and mass publications, to establish patterns in the use of rumors by these two types of press.

1. FEATURES OF THE CONCEPT OF MASS AND HIGH-QUALITY PUBLICATIONS
Modern press is usually divided into high-quality and mass. The basis for distinguishing the opinion press (high-quality, elite) and the news press (mass, popular) are the characteristics that are associated with the peculiarities of the subject, issues, audience, circulation, style and design of publications belonging to these types.
So, high-quality press is characterized by a high degree of analyticity, balanced assessments, calm tone of publications, respectable appearance, restrained layout. Mass media focuses on the entertainment of the audience, its content is often sensational, inaccurate, and sometimes rude materials, the only source of information for which are rumors. The mass press uses an appropriate design: a large number of photo images, cartoons, and a much smaller number of texts in essence. However, this does not mean that the mass press is done at a low professional level, just that there are other standards of skill.
As E. M. Beregovskaya notes, high-quality publications have a clear idea of their own audience, and the yellow press strives to become a press for everyone, it is "omnivorous" [1, p.15]. That is why the popularity of the yellow press is growing every day. In addition, according to the researcher, the high-quality press is not just a seller of information, as does the mass media, but also an instrument of influence, it forms the information field, has an impact on decision-making structures in various socio-political spheres. As noted by A. Papushin in the work "Press and Society", the yellow press does business on the direct sale of information. To increase the number of sales, appropriate "packaging" is necessary-hence the increased attention to the criminal topic, incidents and mass culture, hence the appropriate design of newspapers and magazines, including an illustrative series (an excess of photos and cartoons) [10, p. 21].
Recently, researchers have identified a mixed type of press, which incorporates the features of both high-quality and mass publications.
The object of this study is representatives of the high-quality press - "Rossiyskaya Gazeta" and "New Siberia", as well as the mass press – " Komsomolskaya Pravda "and" Yellow Newspaper", in addition, a representative of the mixed type – "Arguments and Facts", combining the characteristics of high-quality and mass media, will be considered.
The subject of the study is the peculiarities of the functioning of rumors in high-quality and mass publications.
